January Farm Council: neonicotinoid insecticides and bees

The Commission plans would suspend the authorisation of the three main neonicotinoids – imidacloprid, clothianidin and thiamethoxam, for two years on flowering crops that attract bees (such as maize, rapeseed, sunflower & cotton), also spring-planted wheat and barley.

The chemicals, produced by Bayer and Syngenta, could continue to be used only on crops that do not attract bees such as sugar beet or potatoes and winter cereals.
